Kudos, WHT

I recently returned from three months working at the Gallup Indian Medical Center in New Mexico. It was wonderful to experience another culture and to visit the many sights of “The Land of Enchantment.”

Living in another locale brings new perspectives when one returns. One of the things I noticed and appreciate is how much West Hawaii Today has changed in becoming a more complete and significant newspaper. At a time when everything is going digital, it is a joy to hold and read a paper which covers a mix of national, international and local news. Incorporating the North Hawaii News into the paper is a great addition.

I used to feel that I was missing things in reading a local paper but now WHT keeps me informed what is happening in my island community and the world at large. The sports section is especially good. And I have to congratulate the editorial page with its nationally syndicated columns but more importantly the running commentaries from readers.

WHT is doing a real service is printing letters from all points of view and giving the community a forum for the dissemination of ideas and philosophies. Well done, WHT.

Some nuclear defense

We received a letter package on how to prepare if North Korea bombs us. First off, we have to stay enclosed in our home up to two weeks.

This is laughable as my home isn’t air tight. In all seriousness, do I want to survive and look at devastation? No thanks. If the missile comes, I am standing outside with my arms to the heavens.

The sirens will be blasting but I won’t panic. No packing necessary water or food storage for me. I am willing to give it all up for peace.

Cut Henry’s weeds

I’m writing in regards to the 4-foot-high weeds growing in the center median on Henry Street.

Would this be allowed on a highly traveled street in Hilo? I don’t think so!
